The meaning of the word “skincare” and its intrinsic value

From the English “skin care” (‘skin’ skin, ‘care’ care, attention): literally, “skin care through the targeted use of specific products” (Accademia Della Crusca).

In recent years, there has been a real spread of this term, used on a large scale both nationally and internationally, within the cosmetics sector and outside, in so-called “bar talk.”

Nowadays, the concept of “skincare” has become a reflection of modern society, based on the importance of aesthetic appearance and self-care. Not only that: it has taken on a completely new and perhaps even more relevant meaning, linked to the dimension of health and personal well-being.

Doing skincare has transformed, so to speak, into a real way of taking care of oneself: a moment of pause and relaxation among daily duties.

A routine maintained over time can be truly effective in hydrating and nourishing the skin to protect it from harmful external agents such as pollution, UV rays, or environmental stress… elements that we must inevitably deal with and that unfortunately contribute to premature skin aging.

Furthermore, if performed with the right doses and the right creams, it is capable of strengthening the hydrolipidic film, allowing your face to stay young and “rested.”

Yes, but how does the process work? And where should you start?

First step of an essential skincare routine: removing makeup

Since it is made of powders and pigments, makeup is dehydrating for the skin and very harmful if not removed before going to sleep, as it tends to:

• Clog pores;
• Prevent perspiration;
• Encourage bacterial proliferation.

All this can lead to problems such as acne, inflammation, and the worsening of pre-existing skin conditions; this is because dirt, smog, sebum, and other impurities accumulate on the face during the day.

That is why, in a skincare beauty routine before anything else, it is necessary to take a cotton pad (preferably reusable and sustainable) and remove every trace of makeup with micellar water, cleansing milk, mousse, butters, or whatever best suits your needs.

Second step of an essential skincare routine: cleansing

As demonstrated in the previous step, cleansing also proves essential for eliminating germs, bacteria, dead cells, and the last residues of makeup. Not surprisingly, it serves to sanitize and clean the epidermis as best as possible, making it a “ground” ready to effectively absorb subsequent products and, consequently, to offer more visible or long-lasting results over time.

This step also helps maintain the skin’s natural pH and its lipid layer, preparing it for nightly regeneration: during the night, in fact, the human body experiences several sleep cycles (circadian rhythm), some of which promote tissue repair thanks to cell turnover and the production of collagen and hormones (including growth hormone).

Third step of a minimalist skincare routine: exfoliation for skin care

It takes about 28 days for epidermal cell regeneration. Recommended once a week (although everyone has specific dermatological needs), exfoliation tends to speed up this process, stimulating cell turnover through increased superficial blood circulation and the elimination of blackheads.

In all respects, it contributes to creating a more uniform, healthy, and radiant appearance for the skin, allowing it to be smoother and softer to the touch.

Fourth step: toner and serum

The toner and serum phase (applicable only after cleansing and toning, or after the cream as a targeted action booster) is a delicate but extremely intensive phase. It proves useful in strengthening the hydrolipidic film and preventing the appearance of skin imbalances, but also in tightening pores and potentially removing limescale deposited on the face (often present in tap water).

Step five: eye contour

Step six: cream and SPF

This is the only step that most people tend to recognise and carry out, but nevertheless – especially as we get older – it is not enough for a complete skin care routine.
